As some may already know,
Don and Ellen are the camp
hosts at Dumont Dunes. They
are the ones who clean up
the restrooms, pick up any trash
that may get left behind,
offer information regarding
Dumont Dunes to duners, radio for help
and much more. One of the
most helpful and honorable
duties that Don does,
however, is assist with
rescue and getting injured
duners
transported to safety.
During last year Don came to
Craig
and Sheri
Castleberry
from
eXtreme Outdoors,
a vendor out at Dumont. Don
wanted to go for a ride in
Craig's modified Rhino to
see how well it did. He was
impressed with the power and
paddles of Craig's Rhino and
thought it would definitely
help him haul out EMTs to
pickup the injured on the
off-weekends. Since Craig is
a fireman and EMT himself,
this peaked his interest to
sponsor the modifications
that Don wanted to make to
his Rhino. Don agreed and at
the end of the dune season
he brought his Rhino to
Craig's shop.
Once
Don's rescue Rhino got to
the shop, it received
many powertrain mods. A
686 Big Bore Kit with high
compression piston,
Hot Cam Stage 1,
KMS Duners clutch kit, a
Two Brothers dual exhaust, and a
temperature gauge were all
added. A set of
ITP Dune Star tires mounted on
ITP 12 Inch SS Alloy 112 Wheels were
mounted up to help put that
extra power to use in the
sand. As soon as Craig
told the guys over at ITP
what the Rhino was going to
be used for, Craig Peterson
of ITP was immediately on
board and sent the tires and
wheels for the project over
to eXtreme Outdoors.
Next,
what would a rescue vehicle
be without added safety
right? A custom roll cage 4" shorter with
an area for back board and EMT hand
rails was built. It didn't stop
there though. Front And rear LED
warning lights were added,
4 Point racing harnesses replaced
the factory belts, and a
billet rear view mirror was
installed.
Once performance and safety
were improved, it was time
to give it a makeover. To
start, the factory plastics
were replaced with
new Maier
white plastics. Then those
plastics had some custom hand-painted
lettering and
design applied. Finally,
a custom canvas top was
added.
Next time you are out at
Dumont, stop on by Don and
Ellen's camp and thank them
for everything they do for
us duners. As you enter
Dumont, they are just past
bathroom 10 on the left hand
side.
