Heavy Rains Cause Flash Flooding & Damage to HWY 127; Road Closures In Effect

Last week heavy rains near Dumont Dunes caused flash flooding on highway 127 causing the road to be filled with dirt, rock and debris. The road was impassable and was closed in both directions. Crews worked quickly to get it reopened on Aug 30th but mother nature had different plans. More heavy rain on Sept 1st came and flooded the road again. This time some some motorists were trapped for hours. John Edington reported his friend got caught in it that night just north of Baker and didn't make it to dry ground until 3:00. Crews will be working on getting it reopened asap. We'll update you as soon as it gets reopened, but check with Caltrans for the absolute latest. Closures are also usually updated pretty quickly on Google Maps Traffic layer

9/5/23 UPDATE

The brand new Dumont entrance road is fine and so is the river crossing. It's just a ~9'x24' section of highway 127 near the little dunes that is badly damaged. The 127 remains closed from Shoshone to Baker until the highway is repaired.

Thank you everyone for all the updates! Fingers crossed the roads will be passable soon. Also, did anyone happen to see how bad the Little Dunes were? Camping area and the duning area (The picture above doesn't fully show those things)?

I’m planning to fly it again next week.  I’ll get better shots of Little D camping area.

Here are some new pics flying South to North this time.  It was disappointing that I didn't see a single worker, tractor, any sign of clean up or repairs being made between Baker and Dumont.   Hwy 127 is not going to open up any time soon.  It's been almost 2 weeks since the rain hit and no work has started.

I am speechless. I barely know what to type. The Little Dunes camping area and a bunch of dunes are just gone. That hurts.

Thank you Sandblower for the time and effort put into this...

I drove north out of Baker on Hwy 127 to access my private property 10 miles south of Dumont. Hwy 127 is now closed at the power lines about 10 miles north of Baker and they are working on clearing the dirt, sand and fixing the erosion along the side of the road just beyond that currently. Bad news though, there will be NO ACCESS to Dumont from the south for a long time to come. I spoke with the Cal Trans supervisor on site and he said it will be a long time before the road is rebuilt near Little Dumont/Salt Creek. The good news is that they are going to be focusing on getting the road fully open from the north via Shoshone/Tecopa for the Halloween weekend, that is their goal.

For anyone wanting to access Dumont from the south via 127, don't. They said on Halloween weekend they would have CHP assisting with the closure. Take the long way around through Pahrump or Tecopa Rd if you are coming from the south. It sucks but at least they are trying to get you access to Dumont.

This information is current as of Sept 25th, things may change but the guy from Cal Trans on site was really nice and gave me the reality of the situation which is much better than what I got from calling Cal Trans and CHP, they just say "road is closed" with no additional info AT ALL!!!

Also, thank you Sandblower for posting the great pics from your photo recon mission. Those pics and your info was very helpful in accessing the area near my property.
