When I had my first rail a 1641 turbo back in the 70's I would have argured with you but with this one I totally agree!!!! "Why torture yourself all season. Swap them now." Ya never know what I might do! :beer_bang:

I found what I think is a super deal on a low mileage Turbo Subaru Engine. Even though it's only a 2.0 and not the 2.5 it still puts out 227 HP stock as it is the Impreza WRX set up. It's out of a total and is complete with harness radiator and fans etc. Only 35K miles too. I'll put it this way. I paid way under 1K for the total set up. Am told that is a good deal! checked on line and all engines like this one that I found were at or above 3K. I will put it on the engine stand and just take my time to evaluate everything and try and have it mounted and ready to run by next Opening Weekend. I've had it with the normally aspirated VW as I am use to turbo cars and want the additional HP. If I'm lucky the 2180 is about 100 HP. Not enough extrs weight to hurt the total HP on a car that only weighs 850 pounds according to Prowler. I miss the 250 HP I had in the 2.3 Ford Turbo but that car was heavier. I am happy and now have a project to take me through the winter!! If I can hold off that long. Depends on upcoming trips with the VW! I was told that they have to rev to make HP but what the hell does a VW have to do to get anything respectable. Bottom line, I'm happy about my find!!! :ogp:

Too bad Dumont is in Calif..........With a couple of small changes that Hotel thingee might save some those "secret trips" to Pahrump late at night !!! :ogp:

Well the epic story of the used rail continues! Took the car out to DD on Friday to avoid the winds forcasted for Sat. It was beautifull, no wind and near virgin sand! A llittle on the warm side but tolerable. Thank Gawd I decided to do a test run prior to the season!!!!!!!! See that some folks I know were already there. Sorry I didn't recognize any vehicles or I would have certainly stopped by and said HI! ,and begged a beer or something alcoholic to sooth my pain Anyhoo! Put up the Pop up and started to check out the changes I made this offf season. According to Pertronics I was suppose to open the plugs to .035 that didn't work out too well since the engine builder put in the wrong plugs anyway!!!! Then the Tranny I had rebuilt wouldn't stay in Reverse. Talked to John at RC Tranny today and he assures me that if it is something he missed he will take care of it! I did spend $500 for a new cable shifter because I thought the old one was bad. It did it at St Anthony too! An honorable businessman in Vegas. didn't suprise me, as he has a stellar reputation in town!! Finally got it running in the forward gears only to have one of the tires peal off the wheel again! Old style Centerline spindle mount wheels just aren't good for tubeless application Sh*t. Putting innertubes in this week Just can't justify new wheels on a "What If"? Common folks, an :poop: like me couldn't possibly too fast to peal tires off a decent wheel???? Or, could I????? Just when exactally did I p*ss off "Gawd"so bad????? Time to have a couple of beers I can drink now.......Miller low carb 64! Not too bad after a hot frustrating day at Dumont!!! Going back a weekend before Haloween, after the tranny is fixed, and probably Halloween too! Anyone I can camp with if I come out Haloween. Especailly a camp that drinks, one with horny women that are not attached........Yeh right, I am harmless and go to bed early or watch TV! Monkie Hug needed to complete the weekend Remember I am Hope all enjoyed their trip!!! I 'm looking forward to a great season The Guy

Unless you want rules and quiet nights( Quiet Times at night) then stay at the meadows a mile or two north of the State Campground. No assigned sites just camp where you want to. It's just a fairly large flat spot with access to some good riding. It is a ways from the actual dunes section but you can get there with a short ride on some nice trails that take off from there. Seems to be the prefered spot for most since the Camp Ground is kept under tight rules. The "Meadows" is the area I speak of and is towards the campground as you turn left at the dead end road that comes from Hiway 89. Watch the turn off as it can be hard to see. It's several miles from Kanab going north. There is a dirt road at the Cane fields that is tough to find just out of Colorado City before you get to Kanab but unless it has been very recentlyl graded is not the way to go with your rig. It would save you 30 to 40 minutes but is seldom worth it! Have a good trip. It is beautiful up there and will be getting pretty cold at night. You are at 5000 ft altitude so watch the sun if your fair skinned. I've been burnt pretty good up there. Some riding equipment should be re jetted for the altitude. The actual dunes can be treterous if your not carefull. some big drop off coming south from the top! Looking forward to meeting you in the future. Be safe and enjoy!

What's all this fuss with old guys and the weather??? C'mon Pat! Let's go! I'll even go on some slower cruiser runs with ya in the buggy. I'm not prejudice against any dune rides. Give me a call tomorrow and I can give you a heads up where we'll be. Unless you only come out Friday. I wont be there till Fri night. Thanks for the offer and encouragement Pete. Headed out in a couple of minutes just for the day. You have a ball on Saturday! I'll "MISS" my Monkie Hug today!!! Have her save up an extra big un for Haloweeen weekend! "I'll even go on some slower cruiser runs with ya in the buggy." I'll hold ya to this Halloween weekend!!

I'll just do a day trip too. on Friday. Too many weather changes for me! I'll just wait until haloween weekend!!! Besides my hair gets messed up in the wind

Well......if you were a female that was deaf, dumb, blind, oversexed and owned a liquor store you might have a chance of sharing my luxurious accomodations (not). Since your not, and the wind blows like it did when I tent camped once, I spent the night in my truck......That really sucked!!!! :angry2:

Oh, not to worry, I'm going out tomorrow afternoon to be available to chaperone the wilder side of DDR membership! No excessive drinking, no fast rides, no late nights and no "swinging" from rafters that aren't there!!!

The food is in the toy hauler, the liquid refreshments are loaded and the rail and Rhino are ready to load. Tires all aired up and gas all bought and loaded. I am so ready to go but if Acuweather is right and The Weather Channel is wrong I'll be a pi**ed off old man. :angry2: I just can't invision sitting in a rocking trailer with sand blowing into every little opening and watching DTV all weekend! :praying: Somebody pleeze do something about this lousy weather forcast!!!!! I'm too old for this sh*t. At my age I can't afford to miss even one single sand weekend!!! :rant_on: :rant_on: :rant_on:

You mean your actually going to take your rail out of camp this year????? I did think about about a 50 shot on mine too. That would be fun for about 20 seconds!!!
-
If your out this weekend, I'll be by the bluff behind vendor row since I'll be alone. Look for the Red Ford Truck!! Look forward to meeting you! and riding!
-
Naw!!! I like it light and nimble. I am considering a Subi in the future or possibly a turbo set up if $$$$$$$$ alows it. Last time out, Bob nic named me the "SAND FLEA" after I lead him on a ride. Seems like I can turn just a "bit" sharper than he can. Evasive stragety jsut works sometimes. :hatdance: Hope we'll be able to get together some weekend soon ! Harley says HI to Angel!
-
Let's see?????? Take off 4 wires and the blower belt and we'll talk about it. Oh and let the air out of the front tires and to really make it fair .let the gas out of all 4 shocks. BAFOON!
-
I don't have a clue of how many old style VW rail owners are on this site. For me, it would be fun to get together for some runs. It's a fact that most have much bigger long travel rails these days. I can hang for a while but I usually peel off because I can't keep up :ah: I miss the days that a bunch of us slower limited travel cars got together for a ride. I'm and but love to consider myslef a ! Any takers??? I'm out there on all big wekends and some other odd weekends. Planning on Opening weekend too! I know it's hell to be a retiree! Look me up around the area across the road from the old "Host Site". Red Ford Super crew cab with 26' tag along white toy hauler with small USA style graphics.

Don't want to be a nay sayer but Car Fax only reports accidents, flood damage or other problems that have been reported! In other words, if someone totaled a vehicle and never reported it and just fixed it up it won't be on record with Car Fax. If an insurance claim never was submitted it wouldn't be in Car Fax I just saw a program on that fact a month or so again!.. So don't just trust Car Fax, do your due diligence on the vehicle to be sure!!! Have a mechanic and or a body shop check it out for previous damage!!! If the seller is ligit, he won't mind if you do that!!! Good Luck!
