Fatality at comp, Thanksgiving weekend 11-24-12

I didn't realize how far and wide my post had reached so here is what I put on Facebook: --Update on the accident from earlier today. The guy on the quad didn't make it out of the dunes. As I knew when it happened, he was injured severely. Seems the CHP found out I witnessed it and had photos so I had to go and make a statement. My friend Steve also went. The guys next of kin was his sister who walked up as I was there and didn't know about her brother. I had to wait for the CHP and She riff to finish telling her her brother was dead. Sad. The guy in the rail had just come off of comp. Instead of turning or slowing down, he nailed it on the flats. Two quads were heading towards the cut at the left end of comp. The rail, under power, just hit the first quad square in the side. The quad and rider as well as the rail disappeared into a explosive dust cloud. The rail hit the guy and quad hard enough to launch into the air, pivot as to show me the bottom and then land on its roof, roll, and wind up back on its wheels. The quad guy never had a chance. Since I was getting some shots of the action in the area, I took some shots from immediately after the impact. The quality is not the best since I wasn't ready and the distance but I did catch the rail pointing straight up in the air. Still deciding if I want to show it or not. It shows the quad guy down. But, I also think it shows what the consequences of stupid decisions can look like. Later this evening, We watched two rails racing. One clipped a quad. Guess which one got taken away in an ambulance. Quad guy should be Ok, broken wrist and maybe an ankle. Quad is destroyed. Rail has left rear damage to its suspension. When you decide to race into a dust cloud, what could possibly happen? The rails were two of the fastest on the hill. Why would anyone think at such high speeds and acceleration rate with no visibility is an acceptable risk? I just don't get it. Did I mention that this particular race, they changed direction and started on the left of comp and angled up to the right which of course crosses the whole hill into the climbing traffic????? No visibility and they do this???? Asswipes! Rant off... -------------------\\ After getting many messages from family and friends, I decided to not make the pictures I took public. I will be sending them to the CHP for their investigation. The pictures do clearly show the rails path. The story I heard about them trying to miss the quad is fabrication. Plus. My friend Steve saw what I saw. We both gave statements to CHP. -

Come on out and ride with Sand Sports Magazine from Dumont Dunes South pole, through the dunes to the North pole. Saturday November 24th at 2 PM immediately following the Dumontduneriders.com meet and greet. When we get to the North pole, I will take some group photos that will be sent to the magazine. This will not be an aggressive ride but one suitable for those who at least have the basic duning skills to negotiate the dunes. Those with small kids and beginners are free to make their way to the North pole at their own pace and are welcome in the group photos. Let's see how long of a group train we can make! I will have some swag to hand out and it should be fun duning with others who love the dunes. Again, Saturday Nov 24th @ 2PM Dumont South pole. Neal.

Razor road no longer has race gas. I get mine from Willow Springs Racetrack, Kern County. They have a drive up pump.

I'll be there Friday till Tuesday or Wednesday.

Couldn't resist! My bad....

What can I tell ya? (Site standard amenity and individual day-use fees at BLM recreation sites and areas will be waived for the specified dates.) I guess we need Bob and Jake on this right away, (evil sarcasm)

Maybe they can overnight the right one since they screwed up. The bushings I'm waiting on didn't show up today so I'm stuck too. Looks like we are both going down the last minute.
-
Pat, I'm waiting on some parts that were mailed yesterday. Kinda stuck till they get here. Plans are to head out Wed or Thurs latest. Leave Mon or Tues. I always could bring the Manx as a backup but that's a last resort. I'll be in my normal spot. I don't think John is going this time.

Looks like I'll be going, weekend before. Looking forward to it.

13 Year old Casey showing how it's done! -
No photos from anyone? I took some but not as many. Hard to get some clear shots without someone in the way but thats how it goes. Here are some. I loved the graphics inside the wheel Funco gen 6 I think I like the cutaways Expensive digital dash to show an old analogue gage No shortage of great paint and graphics $207,000 and no trunk. Street legal, bada$$ My favorite car there from SCU. Mostly cause of Joes paint job. Nice! And as mentioned, it should be called the SxS show. Some more on my site. Overall I enjoyed it. Caught up with friends and made some good contacts for my photo biz. Made my yearly pilgrimage to the Sand Sports booth. Got my season pass and a new light bar for my rail.

I just checked, I spelled it correctly when I sent in in. Surprised no one has noticed my dyslexic error in the article. Figured the hard core Dumont guys would have called me out already.
-
If you do this, let me know. I will definatly want to get photos of that.
-
I'll be at Idaho Dunes RV park. Look me up! My red buggy in avatar will be there.

I've been working on mine a little each weekend. Just normal off season get it ready stuff. I will also be at St. Anthony's the end of this month. It's a working dune trip though. Best kind!

Lancaster is 15 minutes from me. I'm west of Rosamond about 7 miles in Kern county.

Were do you live? I might consider parting out my old rail. Not an A arm car though. Prowlers has always been a little pricey when I've been there.
