  1. Great to be back at DD! The wind was very quiet, almost too quiet since the sand was fairly beat up in spots. But that just makes for a great workout while riding a dirtbike! (currently looking at SXS) Camping areas around bathroom 8 were trashed so I took a hour or two picking up all kinds of junk/crap/trash and strangely two pairs of shoes. Temps were perfect, nights were only slightly chilly, but the big fire helped with that. Rode with the Mayor and Delivery guy, all of us Riding Red with at least one 2 stroke in the mix. I kept the trip very basic this time, box o soup and sweet potato chips for dinner and pre made sandwiches from home for lunches, and breakfast up in Shoshone. Felt really good to be ripping around again, hope to make it out there again at least once more this year! Good to be back 2 fighter jets flew thru this pass earlier...couldn't have been more than 300 feet off the flats
  2. Went to DD Wednesday-Friday. Didn't do much duning as the group trip in October is more about dual sporting around the DV area. In 3 days we did 400+ miles. In the little time I did ride the dunes it was great, sand was a bit "rippled" and rough from wind but also smooth and flat in most areas. Trash was a disappointing sight, not much but more than expected. Bathrooms seemed clean but that's expected. Great weather!!! Almost no wind, just warm enuf' without being hot (high 80s), great crew of 10+. Sperry Wash is great, hardly any water though. Entrance road was so nice it almost seemed paved! One trip down, 5-6 to go!!
  3. My duner friend sent this from the ADV website. Sums it up perfectly, well done video plus a bit of bonus history lesson on the area. I'm super pumped to go duning now....check out that wet/not too wet sand!! http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/why-i-keep-returning-to-death-valley-and-dumont-dunes-a-red-bull-video.1177795/
  4. Great job! Love it when the voices equal action
  5. Awesome thanks for the info....those X3s are drool-worth for sure
  6. October 19-21st, camping trip is all set! Probably have 10-12 riders with as many rigs. I'm itching to get into a SXS, not sure if it will be this year or next. Maybe I can get some advice on a good ride, looking at a 1000 (duh!) What's the best SxS for Dumont?
  7. Hoping to top half a dozen! This month is looking doubtful, maybe just a little trip to explore and jeep around to cool spots nearby. Great season....loved having the rain and weather! It ended up being good timing on all trips, saw the floods LIVE in October (gnarly, remember the road washed out?), experienced the Super Bloom in DV in February, meet a bunch of new friends to ride with, and only blew up one bike!
  8. Thank you Pete! Yeah that mud is very.....special! At one point, I thought my only hope was to find a way to solidify the ground....where's that dune trash when you need it?? I kick myself for not snapping a pic or two during the struggle, but that stuff is so nasty I didn't want to subject my poor phone to it. I was just happy to be unstuck but bummed I missed if that was my last ride of the season! Next week is totally out with all the rain coming (raining in Big Bear currently, snow by Saturday). Maybe last week of month
  9. Ah, that time of year to squeeze one (or two!) more trips to DD. Assembled a tight crew of one this time. Quick one nighter but a lot of riding up and around the area. It was actually strange to ride/camp in dry sand! It was quite the nice and wet season eh? Can't say I don't miss the wettish sand, but love the warmer temps! We had a crew that could go next week but the weather is looking too wet/stormy. Mayyyyybe week after if the temps hold under 90..... Just a few pics this time, enjoy! One of the best sunsets of the season....one of those type that just keep changing and keep their color forever it seems If you end your day at top of a dune, you must be doing something right! ...the hills are watching.... The hills are.....happy! You can spy this geological "wonder" on the way to Shoshone via hwy 127 (between Tecopa and Shoshone) Chicago Valley Rd area (on other side of pass east of Shoshone), found the "12 mile Spring", but didn't find the nearby grinding holes (mortars) or agave roasting pits. But did score some nice pics and wasn't shot at for going into some possible private property. What's that, you wanted more flower pics??LOL! Back to the sand....this spot at the Little Dunes always seems to pop up the best desert lilies, they just hadn't bloomed yet Too hot to ride in midday so I grabbed my gloves and some bags and started some clean-up along the track that goes from big dunes to salt creek mine area. I went to pull on a strap sticking out the sand and pulled up a lost bag.....some big cresent wrenches (rusted), an intact bottle of water, a busted Pepsi can, some intact snack bags. You never know what's lurking beneath that sand! If you know what "Volcom" is, you'll like this....there are lots of cool rocks around the area, but this one is amazingly similar to the "Volcom Stone". I didn't bring it home, see if you can find where I left it?? Usually when you get stuck at Dumont, it's in the sand right? Well, I highly recommend NOT riding into the "dry" Little Dune Lake! Holy crap, what a mess....I was coming back from Big dunes to camp and while messing around in the little dunes rode thru some area that looked dry but 20 feet in my bike sank up to the axles.....quick mud!? No chance to lift it out....had to tip the bike on it's side and wrestle the rear tire out, then the front....and repeated for almost 40 minutes until I finally reached some solid ground, a whole 20 feet away!!! Damn, it was a chore but could have been worse being I was solo. Poor bike! It was the worse kind of mud....playa or alkaline mud, very very sticky and is like a suction cup when wet and drys hard enough to require an hour or more with a pressure washer to get mostly clean. You should have seen my front brakes....had to tear it all apart to get all the dry mud out. If I would have been in a Sxs or quad I would have been completely screwed! Can you guess what side I dragged it out on? My driveway is permanently stained from the mud (nice reminder) now It was surreal driving out on Tuesday evening, the wind was a bit much for riding or camping, glad the timing worked out. Hope to be back in a week or so for one more round this season! Anyone else going out this month?

  11. Wish I would have seen your post, I was out there on the 21st-22nd. Quite the windy days huh? At least the temps were awesome and the moon was full, dunes were smooth!
  12. Really nice report! What a way to end a great season at DD. Wish I could have made it out there a day earlier to meet ya. Arrived 9am Monday....you guys get any wind? Man, it was windy like a mutha most of the day Mon and then kicked up big on Tuesday evening as I was leaving.
  13. Wow, what a scene, fellow duners jumping in really helped make that situation better it sounds like. A rental....geeze....anyone who is renting out their rzr at DD is kind of asking for it, not good to rent to people who have never been. Really hope everyone recovers, positive thoughts to the victims and speedy healing.
  14. Thank you! There was some names and dates scratched on a big rock at top (2001?), don't think the mtn sees many visitors lol! Dunes sure look different from up there, just wish I would have brought an altimeter to determine the elevation.
  15. Wow, those pictures are incredible! We were there just for the start of it, can't wait to see if it's still going on
  16. Thanks DuneFreak! It was a good test of my fuel range, I've never tapped out my stock tank on my CFR450x (only had her for 6 months), was told it could get me 65 miles, but it was 80 to Furnace Creek stop....but I had juice to spare surprisingly! (Regular was only $2.29, we were floored!) On the way back, the rest of the gang checked out a spot in Shoshone, I'd already seen it so kept going down 127 to Dumont....squeezed 91 miles....on reserve....thought I was going to run out but managed to get back to camp on flumes! And that hike, I highly recommend it but there sure as hell ain't no trail, but that view is second to none. Could hear some high octane buggies buzzing around from the big dunes, just couldn't see 'em.
  17. Oh man just a day, that would be tough!! Have fun at Glamis, I want to get out there soon....maybe next year
  18. Just getting around to posting report and pics from last month! It was a great trip with 8 guys and one gf. Drove out from Big Bear with light rain from Barstow, turning heavy after turning toward Baker. Heavy winds and more rain that fortunately lasted until midnight, then was quiet as a mouse! As you can guess, the conditions were amazing the rest of the trip! We did plenty of dune riding, a side trip to the infamous "Crusty Bunny Ranch" (southeast of Dumont), and a long 180 mile loop to Furnace Creek via Harry Wade road. Saw plenty of prudy wildflowers....we nailed it on the timing for this decades Super Bloom, by accident, sweet! Dantes View was also on the agenda. The rest of the crew did another side trip up Sperry Wash to gulp down a few Date Shakes at China Ranch date farm, so I got bored and decided what the hell I'm going to find out what is on top of that big mountain to the east of the Little Dunes!! Check out the pics for the killer views.... Planning another trip next week and probably one more mid month if the weather holds up. Enjoy! WET and FUN This sunsets for you Barrie Morris....RIP Miss ya Mate Anyone ever slept next to your ride when it's raining? I can cross that off the list! Clancy, Coors lite, CRF The gang, mid 30's to the mid 70's and we ain't talking temperature! Crusty Bunny Mine Inside the earth Terry checking out old headframe Wet desert traction for days Apparently, the Crusty Bunny Ranch has been closed for some time.... Near Ashford Mill in DV Super Bloom! About 150 miles into the 180 mile loop, east entrance to DV. Red Bikes galore! Sperry Wash was running FYI, the "Death Valley Internet Cafe" is in Tecopa, 20 minutes north of Dumont. They offer FREE WIFI, great food, beer and wine and a great atmosphere. Checkitout! You seen this mountain behind the Little Dunes? I decided to see what was on top. Started (hiking) from camp, went up the "road" that goes to first little peak, found a goat trail that climbed to next peak, and then worked north/left to Summit. Very nasty scramble down but totally worth the effort! Halfway up. Not much of a trail eh? Made it to the top! There was a large rock stack, some possible sleeping circles, sentry post, and of course a killer view! Can you see our ring of campers (middle, just before Hwy 127)? Note water flow and cool dune formations! Mandatory Summit Selfie! Rock and Sand contrast Love us some DD! See ya soon!

  20. Hi RUn2it! Just saw this message, opps! On the latest trip we did in Feb, we found a cool cabin called "The Crusty Bunny Ranch", southeast of Dumont, up a nice fast dirt road to mini wash. Apparently there are some mines farther back but we didn't know about them til later. Didn't find any blasting caps darnnit, gotta look better next time!
  21. Sorry for the late reply! There are very few tracks for non-street legal rides, but I have seen a group of 6 or so buggies, quads, sxs and a bike trek from Big dunes to little dunes, do a 1/2 mile of hwy to Harry Wade rd, where you can access "Sheep Springs", "Saratoga Springs" and a few other random spots. But to make it out to Death Valley area/Warm Springs, it's a good trek with luckily no street riding other than the quick bit on the hwy.
  22. Good meeting you Cory, sorry to hear about your loss buddy. What a great way to memorialize your brothers legacy.
