Foxysandchick
The convention industry is very slow also and have not seen it picking up at all yet. Makes for some long nights in dispatch with them not moving in/out 24hrs due to the shows being smaller. But they need me here regardless if the building is full or empty . Raptor0206
Is this an over exaggeration?: http://current.com/items/90026412_lost-vegas.htm Some bites & a trailer play before the main video. Well i just watched that whole video and to tell you the truth if i would of seen that before i moved here at the end of December i probably would not have came. But I did come and I have to make the best of it, sure the reason I came here was to be a police officer and they have since put a freeze on hiring more even though each one promised around 300 NEW police officer a year! I made the best of it and landed a job at the Hard Rock doing security thanks to Cole So far it has been the most fun, exciting and appreciated job i have ever had. Sure I dont get 40 hours a week, sure I dont make 50K a year, but I HAVE A JOB! You know what pisses me off is people b*tch about not having a job but every time I go to work or a drive I see signs "Now Hiring" the problem is people think they are to good for that job! Well guess what, take your pride and leave it at the door because paying the rent/mortgage and buying food with your HARD EARNED money is always better then sitting on your a$$ collecting unemployment or on welfare. I am not speaking out of my a$$, I was out of work for about A YEAR before I landed this job, and I moved halfway across the country! Sure I had a nice truck...well 3 trucks, and yes they all were sold and I now drive around in a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I paid 5k for because I just plain couldn't afford a $400 car payment every month. But I still have my Raptor and I can go play in the sand when I have extra cash for gas. But most importantly I have my self, its called life people you have to roll with the punches and never think you are better then anyone else, because we all put our pants on one leg at a time in the morning from the CEO's of fortune 500 company to the single working mother of 3 with 2 jobs. Just be thankful you have your heath, family and friends.

Just be thankful you have your heath, family and friends. Well said!! I am thankful everyday for my job!! We seem to be doing ok, the elite rich people are still buying pics, so I still get to punch some numbers into a computer and stick a label on the side of a box! Its not exactly the problem solving office management I am used to doing, but who cares, I don't have to wear business suits to work, and I still give it 110%. I am getting a little concerned though cause they are starting to outsource alot of things and the shipping dept is one of those things, so from day to day to day now I am worried that even though I am the one giving 110% that I was the last to be hired, therefore the first to go!! When I was unemployed, I went to a job fair and the lady in line in front of me had a BA in business management and I was in the line for Wal*Mart (who said I was over qualified) But right now I have a job, its a fun place to work, I am thankful for the peeps who gave me the hint of the job opening, but its day to day... I never know what is going to face me when I get into work, its unsettling. And now I have started putting the word out to a few peeps that I am looking for a second job, eves and weekends! You gotta do what you gotta do!
~JILL~
I work in the mining industry and we mine Limestone and dolomatic. We sell alot of hi cal lime to the Gold industry, so as long as gold prices stay up, we are booming. Dolomatic lime when mixed with water is called hydrate, which is also stucco. Now we have seen a drop in that department, as houses are not going up like they were 2 yrs ago. Limestone when hydrate is also hydrate and is used alot in paving. Las vegas paving, frehner and a few more pavers keep that process going. P2 chat is always gonna sale as long as new roads, off ramps and stuff like that are going up. All in all, my work has stayed the same, except the usual ups and downs. Who do you work for? I work at the Sloan quarry formally known as Frehner Construction/So. Nevada Paving. Our buisness has dropped alot here lately, at least in the aggregate division.

lvnalolife
Business is slow. I used to do Civil Engineering design and since there is almost now new construction I had to return to Commercial Kitchen Design. Luckily we have most Casino jobs and some jobs in China to keep us afloat. Unfortunately hours have been dropped to 32 a week and I am scraping to get by now. Hopefully this economy turns around soon.

indasand
After my 3rd job in the last year things are finally looking good. I have been in the security/surveillance/access control industry for almost 20 years. The gaming industry has slowed way down from a legal aspec when it comes to nevada gaming control and the regs for cctv. (casinos are only spendig money if hey have too) But sometimes thing just break..... My customers from Siemens and my last job followed me to my current place of employment. That made me feel pretty good and gave my new boss a great reason to hire me... Its only been about 4 weeks with Jersey Electric and all I can say is it's about time that I am happy again. Great crew!!!! Great boss!!! I'm slowly taking over existing low voltage work and building the rest on my own.... This company is growing faster than expected on the electrical side and I hope to do the same on the security side of things.... The key ingredient is taking care of your customers.... They will remember!!!! I hope to be hiring by 2010, it's hard being the manager of myself LOL j/k
ltr450rider
One of our guys is getting fired tommorow for not showing up today. Especially when he was told last week that anyone who did not come in this week would get the boot on account of one of our main guys being on vacation this week. So needless to say, we will be looking for someone new. Here's the info in another thread. http://www.dumontduneriders.com/invision/i...?showtopic=8725

I have been hearing rumors from different city inspectors that builders are putting houses on the ground and more than the last few months. Not sure if they are just trying to push out there inventory for their year end mark but I have been hearing different things.
Free Agent
At the local Elks I volunteer and manage the bar. I work for free because it's a good cause. All the bars profits (and other Elks too) go to speech and physical therapy for needy children in Calif and Hawaii. We do about a million a year in booze sales at my lodge alone. I hired a now 22 year old girl April to bar tend on her 21st birthday. Cute, savvy,, fun, the old buzzards, golfers, sportsmen and serious drinkers loved her. Hell everyone was crazy about her. She made $10 an hour and kept her tips,,, unreported. If she wanted to work a wedding or party we booked, it was her first refusal to or not to,,, and addition to the tips and pay she got, we tacked another 15% on the functions bill for her too. I wouldn't be far off estimating her tips were well over $150 a shift tax free. When I volunteer bar tend on the shifts no one wants & I make $70 to $100 in tips, so I'm really underestimating Aprils tips. Her money earnings was atmospheric, and tax free. Trouble was, some days she plain didn't show up for work. No call, no I'll be late,, nothing. Cold shot. So I finally had to let her go. It happened too many times. She's now stuffing envelopes and answering a phone in her moms office for $6 an hour. Ain't no bartending jobs, especially like she had available anyplace in this market. About 20% of the bars in Ventura County have folded this year I'm told by my bar owning friends. She came by the house in tears and asked if I'd get her job back. "I always left with my pockets full of money" she said. Hell,, I dunno,,,

RangerZ
Although I don't actually work in the Vegas area, I commute to San Fran once a week. Being a pilot for Virgin America I get to ride on any other airline out there. The passenger loads coming in and out of Vegas are almost always way up there. I frequently get the last seat or ride up front. People are still coming to Vegas, guess they are just not spending as much when they get here. Additionally, our passenger loads have been way up system wide all summer wherever we go. On the other hand, one Brother-in-law in SoCal is a Custom Cabinet maker and he is down to part time. The other Brother-in-law ran several crews for a stucco contractor and he is the last man standing. Hopefully things will start to turn around for all soon. Free Agent
Yeah, it looks like folks are just spending less. I'm guessing Vegas will roll back to the bargain it once was. With City Center opening eventually the competition will be stiff, they'll have no choice. Used to book a 2 night weekend stay at the Hilton for $49 and that included a show and some meals. They usually got it back at the craps table and bar I'd wager. My last Rzr sold in minutes, and a Honda 250 quad we also sold in minutes too both for what you can almost buy a new one for at Berts. I think their is still a good sized cash flow out there. Getting ready to re-carpet and tile the house. The bids are 1/3 less $$ than the quotes we got 14 months ago and the sales guys are actually showing up to quote the job. Time for a new RV too. Yes, we sold that plant back in 1998 due to we found a dolomite deposit at apex and it was cheaper to burn lime at our kilns there. We sell tons of hydrate to LVP, SNP and Frehner, been doing it for years. Been a good job to me, i cant complain.

Chadwick
well things are very shaky for me still. Construction seems to be at a stand still and remodels are still very scarce. It's to bad because the construction industry is such a fun industry and Vegas has really taken a hit hard. Many of my buddies who work in construction are unemployed because there simply isn't any work here in Vegas. I'm hoping this thing turns around quick. I hear different things from some of my inspectors about a couple of builders throwing models on the ground in different areas. I think that most of the builders have cleaned out there standing inventory and are now just kinda hibernating until this thing bounces back. We gotta clear all these vacant homes out before we will see a big difference in the home building side. I think some builders are competing with vacant/foreclosed homes in their own neighborhoods. Vegas in general is still a good place to live and I hope that opportunities will keep me here for as long as I live.
