dirtflickarooster
My close friend recently purchase a project rail. The frame was made by short sand cars The main thing we need help with locating is the center drive or live axle. we have looked at the Protodie and the gear ones. The only issues is that we don't know enough about them to order it and be confident that it will fit. we are not fabricators, but do have friends that are very experienced at fabricating, we just don't want to cut and weld if we do not have to. does anyone know of anyone in town that can either build what we need? or does anyone know who we can order a plug and play kit from? the center drive will be set up for 930's and will have the disc brake mounted to it. Any help is appreciated.
dunefreak
It's too bad Larry is no longer in business. He would set you up with exactly what you need. I used to own a Short Sand Car. The downside to all SSC's is that many parts of his cars were custom and unique. You couldn't just go buy a spindle, a hub, or a center axle assembly, etc. You had to have him or his machinist build it. If I remember right the rear center section was very simple in design. It was 2 sealed bearings pressed into that center hub, a through-axle shaft with 930 CV flanges bolted to the axle. The CV flanges had flanges that the rotor and sprocket bolted up to. See the attached pic. There wasn't much to it. You're probably going to have to get someone to build you what you need unless you can find a SSC parts car to snag the parts from. picture from the rear section of my first SSC

dirtflickarooster
What size bearing are you guys using and where can I get them?
dirtflickarooster
And were the brake discs 10" or 12"?
dunefreak
Any bearing supply store will have the bearings. You'll just have to measure the diameter of the housing. Not sure on the rotor. I would have to guess 10" though.
dirtflickarooster
well at this point we are beyond frustrated. We are at the point where we are going to cut off that back housing and have the protodie kit welded in. We REALLY didn't want to do this. We have been do the bearing warehouses and searched the crap out of the internet. What we know is... the inner diameter of the bearing needs to be 1 3/8" or 1.375 (this is the size of the shafts from both protodie and gear one). the outer diameter of the bearing in order to fit in what we have on the car would need to be 68mm or 2.677", for the life of me i cannot find this size bearing. Any help is appreciated.
