Sandemon
Other than the unveiling of the new Road Grader a few other things that were discussed were the never ending fight to get the fee structure changed, don't hold your breath. The attempt to get several OHV areas as Congressionally designated OHV recreation areas. This would mean that it would take an act of Congress to close them not just a Judges signature. One more thing that is probably coming down the pike is if you have children riding on their own ATVs, you as their parent have to take a training class, its been a law for some time now, just hasn't been enforced. DuNe~Rydher
I have a question that's off topic but you may be able to answer. I know it's been talked about on the forum in the past but I don't remember the outcome of the coversations...but this, in my opinion, is getting out of hand and going to get someone hurt. What's the rule with people roping off, placing cones, ect..at the top of the finger dunes. I had to swerve off a finger at one point last season to miss a line of huge cones. I understand people want to keep their kids safe, but there's better ways than making it dangerous for the drivers. Next time I'll tear them down myself and the owner can take it up with me. Again sorry for going off topic but you and ynot are probably the best 2 people to ask about this. Sandemon
Terry and I brought this up many years ago and as of now I don't think there is a difinative rule on this. Even if it were to be a rule I see a potential backlash with people saying that we are putting thier children at risk. You can allways bring up your concerns by contacting the Barstow Field Office or next time you are at Dumont stop by the Visitor Center. dunefreak
Glamis actually has a written rule or law about coning off areas and putting stakes in the ground. Dumont should do the same.
DuNe~Rydher
Agreed. For the safety of everyone. Sent from the dune in front of you
ynot
I believe we came up with that cones were ok but no metal stakes were allowed to be used. So if the cones have a metal stake inside of them I would suggest a conversation with a ranger not the person with the cones. You can remind the LEO of the danger of a child or person riding by the cone/stake and having a get-off. Also metal stakes are no good for paddle tires. There was just no way to enforce the no cones and tape. To much other higher priority stuff on their plates
P-rot
What about the building of "tracks"? We were coming back from a late day ride the Monday after President's day, and all 4 of us almost dove into a 3 foot wide over 2 feet deep track in the middle of the flats. Thankfully the first one of us had good lights and was able to stop in time, but one of my friend's did not have lights and it could have been horrible!! ynot
Not much can be done about this except to educate parents that the trenches need to be filled in. Will that happen, probably not and it has been an issue for years. Been in those a couple of times myself. i learned that when I hit the flats it's nice and slow all the way back to camp. This stops the dust and pit racers and really the dunes are the place for the throttle, not the flats. not saying anything negative about you but it has been the point we have tried to make through education and LEO contacts.
raspadoo
I would not request any additional rules. We all know where and when to be careful and when there are enough rules to cite the area gradually becomes a cash cow. Example… Glamis
