things i saw that worked

Recommended Posts

This past weekend, there were plenty of Sheriff's and CHP out there as well. And it looks like they were doing a pretty good job with things. They've even got a couple now with a sense of humor. All the others are good points that I think were getting done at Dumont over Tday weekend...... SF Woody :beercheers:

Yeah the older guy riding around in the Ranger was pretty cool. He took my friends beer, Tecate, out of her hand and asked "What the hell is this crap?!" She thought she was in trouble until he told her to "Get a real beer! Anyone have a Bud Light for this poor girl?" Then he gave her a sucker. I was :ban-split::MBdance: :chug: so hard I think I pulled muscle in my stomach. Definatly better than the  holes we dealt with last season.

Bob first of all thank you for your observations at Glamis. Glad to hear they have stepped up with the dumpsters. I have witnessed them in the past and what a mess. As long as the LEO's are there to help people make it a good safe experiance I think that is all that any of us can ask for. Now for what everyone on this thread thinks is the big issue with dumpsters at Dumont, wich since we have people that like to dump all of there household trash out there, are needed. Vicki talks about the cost of dumpsters and collection I think that the BLM can share some of the wealth of the $120 passes and it wouldnt hurt them a bit. Also why not try and get some sponsors, there are enough big dollar companies that benifit from Dumont that could put a little money back and it wouldnt hurt them a bit. I can see it now the weekend warrior sponsored dumpster, yamaha, honda, etc... And finally has anyone contacted the garbage company to see what the cost would be and if they would be interested in helping out. I know that Pahrump Valley Disposal has the contract for Death Valley and the owners are pretty forward thinking. I dunno if Baker has a garbage service but maybey someone should look into it. It would be nice for everyone to do there part and pack in pack out. But there are too many idiots that come out and trash our dunes that any little thing might help. Also I dont know how many time I have been completely filled up with others trash on my way home and need more room to get it all out of the dunes. Dumpsters would help, even if its pilled up near it it would make dume cleanup easier. Just a thought.

I completely understand the fact that dumpsters seem logical. Have a trash problem? Add a trashcan.

But aside from the cost... how many sponsors would sign up to pay a share of 1.5 million every year for eternity and imagine the troubles if any outside funding dries up... there is the environmental issue.

Dumont has enough ways for the anti-access crowd to target us without adding one more that takes less effort than most, just for the sake of convenience... in my opinion.

Okay, I'm not going to get into the whole dumpster debate here but what has always pricked my intrest is how you can be too fuggin' lazy and ignorant :banghead: to realize that you hauled in a lot more zhiat than you will haul out. Bring a box of Cheez Its to the dunes, eat contents of said box, determine that the now empty box is too much to haul back out with you and then discard it in my desert!?! FUG YOU :pissed: :porn:

Is it that hard to empty your refridgerator and cabinets of their contents while you're enjoying the dunes, and then after cleaning up the surrounding camps and loading up their left behind trash, to not figure out that you are still hauling out less weight and volume than you arrived with??? :dope: :angry2: :undecided::unsure::laughing: What the Hey?

Anyway, see ya'll this weekend. :rockwoot::headbang1::rockon:

:undecided::rockwoot::banghead: It only works for the lazy people, I was out there a couple weeks ago and the dumpsters were a nice touch, but the camping area and riding area had trash everywhere. I was disappointed in seeing so much laying around, and even thought to myself, I'm glad Dumont doesn't look like this, no wonder they have problems down here. Even when we stopped to toss in our trash at the dumpster, they were all empty and someone had just sat about 4 bags beside a dumpster instead of tossing them in. No dumpsters at Dumont, if you can bring it out, you can take it home....SF Woody

lol thats funny Woods.... I used the dumpsters this last time at Glamis.. I was fully prepaired to tote it back with me when someone loaded all the bags up and drove them over to the dumpster and made sure it made it in there.. Funny thing is that....everyone that posts on this site is not the cuprits :pissed: its the other group..(add whoom you would like) I personally do not have a problem packing in, out or using a dumpster. Fact is that pigs are pigs and you can not teach a friggin pig nothing(well maybe a hefty fine would help). Point is that you all are barking up the wrong tree here...

As for the leo's... they did a great job at Glamis and to be honest... I was a little nervous driving and riding thinking i might get pulled over for something stupid so I was very carefull on TT weekend.

Thats all :headbang1::rockon:

we have a lot of disscusions of what to do on issues here is a couple of things i actually saw that were working at glamis.

i know some will never agree , however i saw it actually working which makes you think.............

#1) sunday morning when we were packing up i did my trash run by glamis beach store there were roughly 20 dumpsters lined up a trash truck sitting there and they were all clean !!! trash guys were watching and everybody was doing a good job of getting there trash into the dumpsters ( we have all seen the old pics where it didnt, but they tripled the amount of dumpsters and it was working )

#2) camp racing, rangers and highway patrol were enforcing this issue big time and again it was working. they were even nailing side by sides traffic speed on the flats were way down.

#3) vendors row was the cleanest it i had ever seen watered down 5 mph sighns posted and it was very well layed out.

#4) law enforcement they were utilizing highway patrol local sheriffs and blm large presence and they were puting out effort. they were working the road to olds and nailing drunks constantly. they had less luck with litter. but the ones they caught were made to pick up there trash cited and some were asked to leave the olds area. they had enforcement at gecko drags on each end . a crash occured they were there in seconds blocking each end and tending to the victems clearing the accident and allow the drags to continue.

all in all it was quite a sight and i was impressed there was a real effort going on by leos .

i think dumont could benefit from these practices if applied properly. i know we all have gone back and forth on this but what i saw was proof that it can work on a few of these issues we pull are hair out over.

i was out thier for the first time on thanksgiving also bob. and i agree with everything you commented on. but damn why does glamis have to be so huge. almost scary to venture off alone with a rail in those dunes, wasnt sure if i would ever make it back to camp. apply the things at glamis into dumont , and we will have a bad a$$ sand box to play in..

I was at Glamis for Turkey Day also and I must echo the comments about LE for that weekend. They did a fantastic job to the point that Olds Hill was not shut down due to an unlawful assembly and everyone was on their good behavior due to the LE presence. I was camped right off the Olds Highway and can hardly remember more than an hour without an LE vehicle going by or pulling some azzhat over for being stupid. They did a tremendous job.

Hope to be in Dumont in Feb.

im up for some GPS for christmas.....i dont think it is needed @ the D tho......and havent been to the G yet, but itchin to

I thought the same thing about the D... That was until I went to get someone who was arriving at about 1AM and left camp in a straight line to the gully and after a few minutes I thought something wasn't right. Pulled the GPS out of the glove box of the rhino and found that I was .13 miles from camp so I fugured I would just go back and start again. Funny thing was when I got back to camp I was 180 degrees :laughoff: backwards from where I thought I was.

I agree on that.. sometimes not hard to get lost on a moonless night. Halloween i was lost in the dust and was headed to little dumont when i thought i was headed to the entrance... and of course my wife was in the passengers seat :stirthepot: ... it was 1 of those I TOLD YOU SO SEE YOUR NOT GOING THE RIGHT WAY :laughoff:

GPS is always a good idea. Its easy to lose your bearings at night. Useful in marking a broken down toy to return with a tow vehicle. And great for telling rescue people where to go. You may know an area like the back of your hand, but it does no good when your telling someone how to get to your location in a matter of life or death. :dunno:

Plus its great for checking speed, trip length, and avg speed on rides! :dope:

  • 4 weeks later...

I really do have to agree with everyone that is saying about the no dumpsters situation out on Dumont dunes I mean for some people this chore is too dam hard to even follow in there own home let alone trying to get them to use a dumpster or garbage can anywhere else.

The one thing that I do kind of wonder about is me being a visitor there from Canada where exactly would I be able to take my garbage as a (responsible visitor.) Like you all are saying how hard is it to pack some garbage bags with you.

I know when were camping where there isn't any garbage dumpsters or anything were always ready for it. We usually have one or two bags full of bottles and cans along with whatever else we have for garbage. I know we have also went the extra step to throw our egg shells and any carrot peelings or potato peelings into a bucket we have a lid for.

All these things that you all are going over helps me more to understand on what to expect when visiting so its great to know these things before I go down.

You'd have to find a facility possibley in Baker or Pahrump that would have dumpsters large enough where you could dump it. I know it is NOT allowed at the nearby small town of Tecopa. They have very limited resources.

Or you could do like some do and just throe them in the back of your pickup and not tie them down. You won't even have them back there anymore by the time you get home.:crackhead:

Me either! I personally think that providing dumpsters only promotes the attitude that "someone else will take care of whatever is left behind, so let's just leave it behind for mommy."

Show me an area that has dumpsters and ZERO trash everywhere else and I may change my mind.

Until then, I will continue to fight against installing them at Dumont.

VickiW

Well stated Vicky

You can bring it In so why can't bring ot Out we not need dmpsters at dumont How much do we want to pay for Our fun I know Paid plenty of my enjoyment Do we want to pay for other not caring for our enjoyment

I really don't understand why it is so hard for some people to put their trash in a trash bag or can. I can imagine what their homes must look like. Turkey weekend I was driving my hubby crazy cuz everytime he turned around I was out picking up trash and b*tching about people being slobs. I even had the rake out and was going over the 20 or so old fire pits in our camp.

I will give you a short version of the turkey weekend issue we had.

We had some "bleep bleep bleep" that parked by us to pack up their rigs, they left so much trash when they left, my hubby went and chased the guy down and told him to pick up their trash, the guy told him to "F" off so hubby went and pointed him out to the Rangers. Rangers got him, I think gave him a ticket for speeding back towards our camp, his friend came and cleaned up most of his mess before the Rangers could see it, I cleaned up the rest. The Rangers couldn't do anything because they didn't see the trash for themselves, but they did come stay in our camp for a few to make sure the guy and his group didn't come start anything with us. The Ranger thanked us over and over for helping clean up and for pointing out the trash idiots.

The guys that parked on the other side of us that left a huge mess, that again I cleaned up, had a website on their trailers. I left a really, really nice message on their comment page about what I thought of them and their trash. :)

Just a few things then I'm done......

Would it be that hard to clean out and use an existing fire pit?

Aluminum and other metals, glass, nails, hangers, coffee cups, metal bottle caps, etc DO NOT MELT and go away. When the fire goes out THEY ARE STILL THERE.

I am sure that with well over 3000 members on DDR that a portion of that are the slobs that we see around the dunes.

They are OUR dunes. Speak up if you see someone making a mess or leaving trash. Pick up others trash too not just your own. There is not "someone else there to pick it up". The once a year clean up helps but it needs to be done daily. Maybe people will get it if we put a large sign at the entrance to Dumont. "YOUR MOTHER DOES NOT LIVE HERE, PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF"

Ok, I'm done. I could go on and on but I will spare you the
