ltr450rider
Scary thing happened to my buddy at work today. I wasnt there but I heard this story from the 3 guys that were there. As some of you know, I do billboards here in LA, it's a dangerous job, have to be really alert all the time. We are working at hieghts that will kill you. Well, there are other things we have to be aware of other than our step, power lines, high voltage power lines. Jeff started over a month ago so he has alot to learn. Today he had his first experience at the top of a billboard, normally the guys who are in the company the longest have that duty (3-4 guys to a billboard). There are METAL bars that slide into pockets of the vinyl where we tighten everything down with motorcycle style ratchet tie downs. Well Jeff and Jason were working and noticed a really bad smell, they couldnt figure it out. Jeff then notices our crane operator on the ground yelling something at him. Jeff was pulling out the bar from the vinyl and let it touch the power line. :ah: Well lucky azz Jeff happened to be holding a FIBERGLASS bar! They dont contuct electricity. Some boards use fiberglass instead of steel. If Jeff had been holding a steel bar, he would have been fried and then probably had fallen to his death from about 60' up. So they continue working and then the smell suddenly went away. Jason is convinced that the smell was the smell of death. I really believe that someone was watching out for Jeff today. He would have met his maker if he was any other billboard. These guys were not themselves when they found us and told us what happened. They were scared crapless. This is not a halloween story, it really did happen this morning.

dunefreak
congrats on the job my story is pretty sad. this last week, we had parent-teacher conferences. we hold them in the cafeteria for the middle school, so the parents don't have to go hiking around campus to talk to all the teachers. they are all right there in the cafeteria. one parent, and her 19 yr old daughter showed up for a boy in one of my classes that just flat out didnt turn in any work all quarter. progress reports were sent home with the boy to cover my i followed protocol to a tee. im still not fully aware of what kind of :poop: the boy has been feeding his mom, but it was bad enough for the 19 yr old daughter to begin our conference by shouting obscenities @ me in a crowded cafeteria full of parents and teachers. after the third time asking her to quit using foul language while on school grounds, i finally stood up, looked her in the eye and said, " its obvious you arent in the right frame of mind to conduct a conference about (boy's name)'s grades, and the reason he got them. youre going to need to come back when you're in the right frame of mind to do that." i have slowly found out only SOME of what he has been feeding his mother in an attempt to cover his for getting bad grades in my classroom..here is what i know he claimed i threw away his assignments he attempted to turn in because they werent stapled (i gave them back to him, told him to get the stapled, and turn them in before the end of the period) he claimed that that i made him sit in a crooked desk, because i said he was crooked i have had to move this student around several times due to his inability to not disrupt eveyone around him with talking while im in direct instruction mode, doing multiple step problems on the board. its to the point now where he doesnt even sit with the rest of the class. i have him isolated away from the group (and it works) when he attempted to turn in a couple of assignments, all he had were the answers to multiple step problems written down on 1/2 to 1/3 of a sheet of paper on the front. the problems we do (about 15-30, depending on the classtime we have) worked out properly, require about 1/3 of the paper by themselves. so each assignement is about 2-3 pages, front and back, long. that is why i require them to staple the assignments before the are turned in i used to have 2 staplers i would allow the students to use earlier in the year, but they turned up missing. i gave all my classes a chance to give them back with no concequences, but no one did. i wasnt going to replace them only to have them stolen again, so i told the students, AND sent letters home to the parents detailing the event and that the students are now required to staple their own papers. freeking sad Speaking of following protocol to a tee.... I don't wanna sound like a jerk, but isn't there something in your contract or employer agreement about not discussing or sharing information regarding school or work related business. I know even our work has such a rule. I know you didn't mention any names, but still. Just might wanna be careful, J.

R- It's actually "Jefferson", and yes, we have had a great time with his name. Let's see how far you can take this "play on Sean's name thing" So far we have, "Now I can say I have SEAN (seen) you" and the above mentioned in bold font. ltr450rider
New story here: I'm getting on the 210 freeway this morning from Azusa Ave as I do every morning at 5:30. The main difference that seperates today from other days is the fact that heard a noise that sounded like stuff banging on a flatbed semi-trailer. As I'm lookin at the freeway lanes (I'm at the light on the on-ramp), my eye catches a flash on the other side of the freeway (eastbound lanes). There is a full size semi-truck and trailer sliding on it's side down all 4 lanes of traffic at about 50 mph, ON FIRE!!! :ah: There was sparks and smoke and chit flying all over the place. Cars were slamming on the brakes and sliding every which way. Now the only reason I am saying this is because no one got hurt, but it was AWSOME!!! I tried calling 911 but now it's like calling a credit card company to dispute a charge, they actually have a menu where you have to choose between a non-emergency or urgent situation . So I gave up on that and called KROQ 106.7 instead. I told the phone op that there was a flaming big rig on its side in the middle of the freeway, she was impressed. :angry2: http://www.myfoxla.com/myfox/MyFox/pages/s...mp;locale=EN-US So that's my story of the day. ltr450rider
I put a 30x30 Oscars ad on the side of Andy Dicks apartment today. He left his Honda "truck" in our way but the bastid wouldn't answer his door to move it so we had to use the construction site next to his building. ltr450rider
So today I'm working at Sunset and Vine complex, more specifically the high azz billboards on top of the 10 story building. It's pretty damn scary by itself, but then I come up on this huge azz TERYDACTYL nest, with 2 baby terydactyls in it. The peckers on these birds were huge, thier beaks were pretty big too. BA-DA BAH. So I snapped off some pics with my phone and here ya go... And this is the newest, highest billboard in the state of California, I will be putting an ad up here sometime next week, it's still under construction. This is the same complex that Jimmy Kimmel Live is going to be at tonight 4/23, you might be able to see my boards in the background. ltr450rider
do they get hazard pay for the cali smog up there. The worst places to ever work in are parking garage/structures. We do a huge one (60'Hx209'L) in downtown LA. The material is a mesh so it traps all the little particles that normally get blown out of the structure by the wind. Last time we took down the Pepsi ad my grey shirt was black and I was breathing that chit the whole day. That stuff is the worst.
