rickj202 Posted September 30, 2008 Share Posted September 30, 2008 Hello, I am planning a trip to Dumont Dunes for the first time in late Oct. The problem I am faced with is more than half of my friends would like to ride in the sand but the others would not mind riding on hard pack terrain. Are there areas at Dumont that are easily accessible for both sand and hard pack? If so, can you guide me in the right direction. Where to park the toy hauler? Would like to be parked in the sand not to tear up the paddles but be able to get to hard packed with the motorcycles for the kids. I have some adults and young kids going with motorcycles and no paddles. I personal love riding in the sand. I am trying to convert everyone into sand riding eventually. If you look at the map link for the dunes you will see that there is plenty of area that is hardpacked near the dunes theirselves. Lots of wide open area that suits the taste of many. You can park anywhere up on the flats and with a little caution your paddles will be fine and the dirt riders will have access to the hard pack. Please become familiar with the out of bound riding areas(map on the front page of this site) The hard pack riders need to stay out of these areas and on marked trails only. You can have a nice ride over to the mines which is partly sand and harder pack. That way all of you can see Little Dumont and the area out towards the highway. You may want to buy your pass ahead of time just to make the trip easier, again vendors are listed on this site or you can visit FriendsofDumontduneas.org for any other help. Have fun and be safe. Dumont takes a little getting used to lots of razors and they will hurt you. If you can hook up with other folks that are familiar with Dumont you can have a great time riding and making new friends. It worked out for many of us because of the hills and trails behind us that favor trail tires and lots of sand towards the dunes for the sand tire folks. A little rocky but as mentioned a little care until you get out of there doesn't ruin our sand tires. In fact I take both sets of tires for the ATV so I am not limited to where I go. I sssume that by "the end of October" you must mean Haloween weekend. It will be very busy and should be a "HOOT" for your first trip. If the weekend before, the 24th, there will be some hard core folks out there too. Thanks, Rick My suggestion would be to turn left after you top the hill that open up to the flats in front of the dunes but before the vendor row sign and where the ranger station sets up. There are a couple of mild washes to the left and past the second one of those only a few hundred yards past the top of the hill I turn left and go a short way to get away from the road. find a level spot and break out the gear and set up.
